Phil Nevin

Phil Nevin, born January 19, 1971, graduated from El Dorado High School in 1989 after helping the Hawks win the CIF 5A Championship and compiling 83 hits, 56 RBI, and 20 doubles over his varsity career. He went on to star at Cal State Fullerton, where he won the 1992 Golden Spikes Award and was named College World Series MVP. That same year, he was selected first overall in the MLB Draft by the Houston Astros.


Nevin made his Major League debut in 1995 and played 12 seasons with seven teams, including the Astros, Tigers, Angels, Padres, Rangers, Cubs, and Twins. He appeared in 1,217 games, hit .270 with 208 home runs and 743 RBI, and was an NL All-Star in 2001. In 2010, he became manager of the AAA Toledo Mud Hens.

Bret Boone

Bret Boone, born April 6, 1969, graduated from El Dorado High School in 1987. He holds the Hawks career home run record (16) and tied the single-season record with 10 in 1987. Boone helped lead EDHS to CIF Semi-Finals in 1986 and 1987, finishing with a .399 career batting average, 107 hits, 65 RBI, and 75 runs. He played college baseball at USC and was drafted in the 5th round of the 1990 MLB Draft.


Boone made his MLB debut with the Seattle Mariners in 1992, becoming the first third-generation Major Leaguer. Over 14 seasons, he played for the Mariners, Reds, Braves, Padres, and Twins. He appeared in 1,780 games, hit .266 with 252 home runs, 1,021 RBI, and earned three All-Star selections and four Gold Gloves at second base.

Dan Petry

Dan Petry, born November 13, 1958, graduated from El Dorado High School in 1976, where he set the single-season strikeout record with 149 and led the Hawks to a CIF 2A Championship. He was drafted straight out of high school in the 4th round of the 1976 MLB Draft (74th overall).

Petry debuted with the Detroit Tigers in 1979 and played 13 MLB seasons with the Tigers, Angels, Braves, and Red Sox. 


He was a key part of the Tigers' 1984 World Series championship team, going 18-8 and finishing 5th in AL Cy Young voting. He also earned an All-Star selection in 1985. Over his career, Petry recorded a 125-104 record, 3.95 ERA, and 370 appearances, including 300 starts and 52 complete games.

Steve Gullotti

Steve Gullotti began his El Dorado coaching career in 1981 after three years at Valencia High. In his first season, he led the Golden Hawks to a CIF Championship game appearance. Over 28 years, his teams won seven league titles, made 21 playoff appearances, reached eight semifinals, and played in four CIF title games—winning in 1988 and 1999. 


The 1999 team was also named California State Champion.

Gullotti retired in 2009 as head coach with a career record of 512–251 and became El Dorado’s Athletic Director. He was named CIF Coach of the Year in 1989 and 1999, and Orange County Coach of the Year in 2004. Over 75 of his players went on to play college or professional baseball, including MLB stars Bret Boone, Phil Nevin, Chris Cron, and Kevin Blankenship.


He co-founded the prestigious National Classic high school tournament in 1990 and was inducted into the El Dorado Hall of Fame (2011), CIF Hall of Fame (2017), and Yorba Linda Hall of Fame (2018).

Brett Tomko

Brett Tomko, born April 7, 1973, graduated from El Dorado High School in 1994, leading the Hawks to a 21-8 season, an Empire League title, and a CIF Division I Quarterfinals appearance. Drafted in the 20th round that year, he opted to play college baseball at Mt. San Antonio and later Florida Southern, where he led the team to a Division II national title and earned MVP, Pitcher, and Player of the Year honors. 


Tomko debuted in the MLB with the Cincinnati Reds in 1997 and played 14 seasons with 10 teams, including being part of the trade for Ken Griffey Jr. He appeared in 397 games (266 starts), posting a 100–103 record and 4.65 ERA over 1,816 innings.

Matt Luke

Matt Luke began his baseball journey at El Dorado High School in Placentia, California, where he was a standout player for the Golden Hawks. After graduating, he went on to play college baseball at the University of California, Berkeley, where he developed into a top prospect. 


Luke was drafted by the New York Yankees in the 8th round of the 1992 MLB Draft. He made his Major League debut with the Yankees in 1996 and later played for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Cleveland Indians, and Anaheim Angels over five MLB seasons. Known for his power at the plate and versatility in the outfield, Luke wrapped up his professional career with a .242 batting average and several seasons in Triple-A and international leagues. He remains a proud alum of El Dorado High School, where his baseball roots began.

Dylan Moore

A product of El Dorado High School in Placentia, California, Dylan Moore made a name for himself early on as a talented and versatile infielder. He continued his baseball journey at Cypress College before transferring to the University of Central Florida (UCF), where he earned All-Conference honors for both his bat and glove.


Moore was drafted by the Texas Rangers in the 7th round of the 2015 MLB Draft. After advancing through the minor leagues and spending time with the Braves and Brewers organizations, he signed with the Seattle Mariners in 2018. He made his MLB debut in 2019 and quickly became known for his ability to play multiple infield and outfield positions. With a combination of power, speed, and defensive range, Moore had a breakout season in 2020 and continues to be a key utility player for the Mariners—grounded in the fundamentals he developed at El Dorado.
